The Kaleidoscope Institute is happy to announce that Dr. Janet Bennett will be a faculty member of the Northwest Training Institute, August 16 -20, 2010 at the Rainbow Lodge Retreat Center (46820 SE Mount Si Road, North Bend, WA 98045). Dr. Bennett will be present at the last day of the training offering her insights and expertise on the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS).

Dr. Janet Bennett is co-director of the Intercultural Communication Institute (ICI) and chair of the ICI/University of the Pacific Master of Arts in Intercultural Relations Program. Her Ph.D. is from the University of Minnesota, where she specialized in intercultural communication and anthropology. She also holds a B.A. in psychology and journalism from San Francisco State University, and an M.A. in speech communication from the University of Minnesota.

For 12 years, Dr. Bennett was the chair of the Liberal Arts Division at Marylhurst College, where she developed innovative academic programs for adult degree students. As a trainer and consultant, she designs and delivers training in intercultural competence for university faculty and staff, corporate managers, diversity teams, and corporate trainers in the U.S., Asia, and Europe. She teaches courses in training and development in the graduate program at Portland State University, and has published in the area of intercultural training design, developmental instruction, and cultural adjustment. Her most recent research is on the topic of integrating cognitive, communication and learning styles in intercultural training design.

Additional faculty members include Stacy Kitahata, Kristina Gonzalez, and Marcia Patton, who have studied through the Intercultural Communication Institute in Oregon to become certified as administers of the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). Of course, our Executive Director, Eric Law, will be there to make connections and give insight on how this important theory/tool connects with the continuing development of KI skills, tools and resources and how they apply to yourselves personally and in your ministries.

We envision a unique KI training event with the following elements:

1. Each participant will be invited to take the IDI online before arriving at the training event. The results of the full group will be interpreted during the training.

2. Days I –III will be in two tracks:

  1. Track One is for first time participants and will cover Modules I–VII of our KI Basic Training.
  2. Track Two is on advanced design and training for participants who had done our KI basic training.

3. Day VI will focus on:

  1. Creating individual developmental plan
  2. Making connections between theology and the stages of intercultural sensitivity
  3. Reflecting on the implication of our intercultural sensitivity levels for our ministries
  4. Application of KI skills and tools to different stages of intercultural sensitivity development

4. Day V will be with Dr. Bennett.

We are now issuing a call to all KI folks to consider coming to this event in August for the following reasons:

  1. We will be holding this event at the Rainbow Lodge Retreat Center (46820 SE Mount Si Road, North Bend, WA 98045), 45 minutes east of Seattle. It is a beautiful spot to cool off in the middle of summer. Check out their website: http:// rainbowlodge.org
  2. If you are already a KI facilitator/associate, or considering becoming one, doing the IDI is essential to your personal development as you work toward proficiency in using KI material.
  3. You get to meet the wonderful KI family in the Northwest. They have worked hard to become an ecumenical team that can deliver local resources to their churches in the different denominations— specifically the Lutherans, United Methodists and American Baptists. We can learn a lot from their experiences.
  4. The more people come, the less it will cost per person.
